West Virginia’s tourism industry is on a historic upswing, with the mountain state breaking records and drawing visitors from far and wide. Among the latest attractions making waves is Rail Explorers, a one-of-a-kind outdoor adventure located at the junction of the Elk River and Buffalo Creek in Clay, West Virginia.

Rail Explorers offers an eco-friendly adventure that showcases the state’s stunning natural scenery. Visitors can pedal along the historic Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad, covering 12 miles of scenic forest on motorized rail bikes. Along the way, riders will encounter highlights such as the Devil’s Sawmill Waterfall and Sand Fork Bridge.

This immersive experience is already a hit. Rail Explorers, originally based in Rhode Island, opened its Clay location in June 2024. The reception has, so far, exceeded expectations.

“Our initial projections were only, you know, maybe 8 to 10 thousand riders in our first season, and we’re going to hit probably over 16 thousand when we finish,”

Rail Explorers District Manager, Trey Corwell

The success of Rail Explorers is part of a larger trend. West Virginia’s tourism industry brought in over $8 billion last year, with visitor spending up 17% compared to pre-pandemic levels. The state welcomed over 75 million visitors in 2023, each drawn to the region’s natural beauty and adventure opportunities.

“Clay is one of the poorest counties in the state of West Virginia. They recently made headlines for closing their last grocery store—only, I think, a year and a half ago, maybe. So, to bring any industry to the region at all is wonderful news, and I think that it’s a sign of future prosperity to come,” said Alexandra Macia, a recent Clay County tourist.

Rail Explorers operates tours six days a week, offering options for up to four riders per bike. The experience is pet-friendly, making it a great choice for families, couples, and outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore West Virginia’s landscape in a new way.

For those seeking adventure, history, and a healthy dose of nature, Rail Explorers promises an unforgettable journey.
